Essential Word X Shortcuts and Timesavers
From Avondale Media Experts

When in Doubt, Control + Click
Microsoft has literally spent thousands of hours watching people use Word, and have analyzed what features they use most, and when.

Their engineers have programmed these frequently used features to be available instantly by holding down your Control key (NOT the Command key!) and clicking with your mouse on a selection.

When you do this sequence, a menu appears with commands appropriate to what has been selected.
Position Text Anywhere with Click and Type
Word X has made it easy to position text anywhere you want on the page—even in the margins! Click and Type is the feature that makes it happen.

All you have to do is make sure that you are in Page Layout view, and double-click with your cursor anywhere on the page, or in the top/bottom margins.

In the main page it positions your insertion point by using carriage returns and a tab stop. In the margins it opens the standard Header or Footer areas for entry.

The “Do That Again Command”
Could this be the handiest tip ever? Many MS Office experts think so. Like the Undo command that remembers the last action you took (Command + Z), the Redo command also remembers, and allows you to “do it again” (Command + Y).

Imagine that you just changed the font of some text in your document, and want to change the font of some other text located elsewhere. Just highlight and type Command + Y!

It works with just about any command (paragraph spacing, merging table cells, etc.) Try this one today, we guarantee it will change your life!

Make Text Larger/Smaller
Ask a Word expert what shortcut they use the most when formatting text, and it will be the one that makes highlighted text bigger or smaller.

With any text highlighted, just use the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + Period (ah-ha! the period key is also the “greater than” key)

Use the “less than” sequence to do the opposite Command + Shift + Comma
Copy and Paste Formatting
You’ll use the Redo command often to replicate formatting changes, but the one drawback is that it only remembers the last action took.

If you reformat some text so it has a different font, color, and style (bold, italic, etc.) Command + Y will not “remember” or apply all of those changes to a different selection. In this case, you can “copy” all the formatting from one selection to another—here’s how:

1) Position your cursor in the text with the formatting you like.
2) Click on the Format Painter icon in the toolbar (the one that looks like a paintbrush).
3) Highlight the text you want to change—voila! It is magically reformatted, and your cursor returns to normal.

PS: If you want your cursor to stay in “paintbrush mode” double-click the Format Painter icon in the toolbar during step 2, and keep highlighting various parts of the document. Just click the icon in the toolbar when you are done to turn the feature off.
